How to Make Number and Letter Cakes for Any Celebration

Birthdays, anniversaries, and any gatherings, really, are made even more memorable with a personalized cake in the shape of a monogram or special number. But not everyone has the time, skill, patience, or all the different shaped pans needed to get it right the first time.

Our Numbers and Letters Cake Pan comes with special inserts and simple illustrated instructions to make every number, letter, and even some punctuation marks. This eliminates the need for multiple pans, unreliable carving, and the time it takes to review how-to videos.

Here are some tips to make delicious party centerpieces. We’ve also included easy ways to make alphabet and number cookies and Rice Krispies Treats®.

Piece of Cake Directions

  1. Make the Batter. You can use a standard packaged cake mix or make your own. Just follow the recipe or instructions on the cake box as usual.
  2. Gather the Inserts. The pan comes with 8 inserts and a blue triangle cutting tool. Find the letter or number you are making on the diagram that came with the pan (or see here).
  3. Prepare the Pan. Brush oil on the bottom and sides of the pan and the all exterior sides of the inserts you’re using. Skip the aerosol nonstick spray, it may create a sticky residue that’s hard to remove. You’ll notice the bottom of the pan is gridded; this is to keep the batter and inserts in place. Position the inserts in the pan based on the diagram. Some letters and numbers will look backwards because you’ll flip the cake over after baking.
  4. Fill the Pan. Fill the area around the inserts (not inside the inserts) with batter about two-thirds high. Evenly spread the batter to all corners and edges so the cake is level from end to end.
  5. Bake the Cake. Bake according to the recipe or cake box instructions. The time may vary depending on the letter or number, but the average is 26–31 minutes at 350°F (180°C). To check for doneness, use the toothpick method or the Cake Tester and Releaser. Let it cool on a cooling rack for 10 minutes, remove the inserts, then invert on the rack, and remove the pan. After the cake is completely cool, place on a serving platter or cake board. Use the blue cutting tool to trim the edges if needed.

More Helpful Tips

  • You can use the inserts to cut a prebaked cake.
  • When using the cutting tool, place the cake on a cutting board or serving platter.
  • The letters ‘I’, ‘L’, and ‘T’ and the number ‘1’ may be bake taller than other numbers and letters.
  • Before you begin decorating, add a crumb coat layer. You’ll be happy you did.
  • If you have leftover batter, make cupcakes or mini desserts.
  • Unless you’re following a theme, there’s no need to decorate in an orderly fashion. For a kid’s birthday, let them decorate their cake any way they want using their favorite colors, candies, and imagination.
