Here are our top seven tips for keeping kids safe in the kitchen as they're learning how to cook!
Use your judgment to determine if a tool, accessory, utensil, or task is suitable for a kid’s age and skill level and when supervision is appropriate. Always use kitchen tools and cooking appliances according to the user manuals.
Keep sharp or potentially dangerous tools and electrical appliances out of reach of kids (and unplugged) when they’re not in use, and store them safely and securely. Emphasize the importance of putting kitchen tools away after use to reduce the risk of accidents.
Before you get started, set clear expectations about when to ask for help or permission from an adult in the kitchen, like with cooking appliances or sharp objects.
Demonstrate the role of safety equipment in the kitchen to kids. Explain how to use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves to handle hot items to avoid burns or injuries, and aprons to keep clothes safe from spills and splatters.
Let kids know what to do in case of an emergency, including how to use a fire extinguisher, if needed, and how to safely exit the kitchen and call for help in case of a fire.
